Understanding an Optometry Review at KINNECT
Updated over a week ago

As part of the pre-employment medical assessment, candidates may sometimes require an optometry review. This step is essential to ensure that candidates possess the necessary vision capabilities for their roles. At KINNECT, we prioritise the health and safety of both employees and workplaces. Here’s what you need to know about the process and what to expect if you are referred for an optometry review.

Why an Optometry Review is Needed

During pre-employment medical assessments, candidates may be identified as having a vision deficit. This can range from minor issues to more significant vision impairments that could affect job performance or safety. In such cases, the KINNECT Doctor will refer the candidate to an Optometrist for a comprehensive vision review. The purpose of this review is often to evaluate the need for prescription glasses or, if the candidate already has prescription glasses, to determine if the current prescription needs updating. This ensures that candidates have the optimal vision required for their roles.

Who Can Perform the Review

Any registered Optometrist can conduct the optometry review. This includes professionals working at well-known optometry brands such as Specsavers, OPSM, and Oscar Wylee. These establishments are equipped to provide the necessary assessments and typically offer same-day appointments, making the process convenient and quick.

Cost of the Optometry Review

In most cases, optometry services are bulk billed under Medicare. This means there should be no out-of-pocket expense for the candidate. However, it's always a good idea to confirm with the optometrist when booking the appointment to ensure there are no unexpected charges.

The KINNECT Referral Process

Once a vision deficit is identified:

1. Referral Letter: KINNECT will provide the candidate with a referral letter. This letter outlines the specific vision assessment required and includes a set of questions that the Optometrist needs to answer regarding the candidate's vision.

2. Appointment Booking: The candidate can book an appointment with any Optometrist of their choice. Given the prevalence of optometry services, appointments can usually be made on the same day, ensuring minimal disruption to the candidate's schedule.

3. Vision Assessment: During the appointment, the Optometrist will perform a detailed vision assessment, answering the questions provided by KINNECT and ensuring a thorough examination of the candidate's vision capabilities. If a prescription is required, the Optometrist will provide that to the candidate as part of their assessment.

4. Report Back to KINNECT: After the assessment, the Optometrist will compile a report detailing their findings and send it back to KINNECT. This report will help the KINNECT Doctor determine the next steps and any accommodations or further actions required.

The Simplicity and Efficiency of the Process

The entire process is designed to be straightforward and hassle-free. Candidates are usually able to get an appointment quickly and have their vision assessed efficiently. With many mainstream optometrist brands offering comprehensive services, candidates can feel assured that they are receiving quality care.

In summary, an optometry review is a vital step in ensuring workplace safety and health. At KINNECT, we make this process as seamless as possible, providing clear guidance and support to candidates every step of the way.
